There is no doubt Ms. Bayley's debut novel is very well written and she proves to be a remarkable storyteller. She shares both the beauty of South Africa along with the ugliness of apartheid in a fair and reflective manner. I, though, did not comprehend the means to the end. While both Kate and Georgina pursue quality advice from their friends about their relationship, they differ to a spoiled bigoted brat who spews his venom to purposefully destroy a touching relationship through threats and blackmail. I just did not see this coming and was very saddened that such a beautiful love story was jaded by the hatefulness of a single person. Having said that, I would still recommend this book for any heterosexual woman considering a lesbian relationship and any lesbian who is considering a life with a heterosexual woman. On a similar vein, I would recommend Waltzing at Midnight by Robbi McCoy, for the same reason. BTW, same-sex marriage has been legal in South Africa since 2006.Product details

This is a lovely story. It is a tale of love found in unexpected places. It will leave you smiling and feeling good all day.
Highly recommended. A great summer vacation book!
This is a wonderful story that most lesbians can certainly relate to. Written in a sensitive and colourful manner that brings both main characters fully to life it is the perfect setup for a surprizing twist and turn. Really good read!
I took me two days to read. I fell in love with the characters in this book. It also wasn't just a love story but a story about loss and moving forward. Nothing was sugar coated...it was all very real. Really great summer reading.
Was a very simple easy read that I thought lacked character development. I felt one character was very selfish and perhaps for this reason I did not really enjoy the story. Some spices parts for sure though!
Everything about the book was honest, the political situation, social attitudes of the time and the barriers and challenges faced by Guy female couples to this day.
You could connect with the characters to the point of experiencing a sense of lost at the end of the book.
I just finished reading Dianne Bayley's, Brave Lives, and was mesmerized by the story ... By the drama and the emotions ... The love and the hatred ... the open-minded and the bigoted. A great heroine in a great read. Highly recommended!
Ms Bayley can really turn a phrase ... I have been quoting some of my favorites for days. Her, "the coffee was so weak that I almost had to help it out of the cup", had me roaring with laughter right after I was shedding tears, and I have had a great time sharing that line since reading it.
And then there are the ...ummm ... adult scenes. Articulately passionate ... Ms. Bayley's dialogue manages to put this conservative red-neck heterosexual reader's empathy deeply into the woman to woman action without it being licentious ... but still quite literally breath-taking.
This is a heart-warming Lesbian love-story that is oh-so fun, oh-so poignant and oh-so readable.
Kudos Ms. Bayley ... And thank you for a great read.
